For the Prostate as the rest of our body,- things change as we get older. The prostate gland tends to grow larger with age, and may squeeze the urethra and cause problems in passing urine. Doctors call this condition benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or benign prostatic hypertrophy. For some men in their 30s and 40s they may begin to experience these urinary symptoms and need medical attention. For others, this symptoms aren't noticed until much later in life.

By the way: Benign means "not cancer," and hyperplasia means proliferation of cells beyond what is normal – thus BPH is a noncancerous growth of the prostate gland with the result being that the prostate becomes enlarged. It is not linked to cancer and does not increase your risk of getting prostate cancer.
BPH rarely causes symptoms before age 40, but about 50% of men over 50, more than half of men in their sixties, and as many as 90 percent in their seventies and eighties have some symptoms of BPH.

What happens is: the prostate enlarges, the layer of tissue surrounding it stops it from expanding, causing the gland to press against the urethra like a clamp on a garden hose. making the urethra become more narrow. The bladder wall becomes thicker and irritable. The bladder begins to contract even when it contains small amounts of urine, causing more frequent urination. Eventually, the bladder weakens and loses the ability to empty itself, so some of the urine remains in the bladder. This causes many of the problems associated with BPH.

Well... I guess you all know this. :) But a blog without facts on the theme, what would that be? So, here we go:
The prostate is part of the male reproductive system. The gland is made of two lobes, enclosed by an outer layer of tissue. It is located below the bladder and in front of the rectum, and surrounds the urethra, the tube-like structure that carries urine from the bladder out through the penis.

Still the scientists do not know all the prostate's functions; but here's some: It is producing the fluid that mixes with sperm to make semen. This fluid energizes the sperm and makes the vaginal canal less acidic.
